Self-managed
Self-managed is a plan management type where the participant or their nominee pays providers directly and claims the cost back from their plan.
Self-managed is one of the three plan management types. A participant who is self-managed, or their nominee, pays a provider directly and then submits a claim to the NDIA for reimbursement.
Being self-managed gives a participant the widest choice of who to buy from, including unregistered providers, along with the responsibility of keeping records and managing payments.
A plan can mix self-managed funding in some budgets with plan-managed or agency-managed funding in others. Which type applies to each budget is stated in the plan itself.
