Assistive technology (AT)

Assistive technology, often shortened to AT, is any piece of equipment or device that supports a person to do a task independently or more easily, from a simple aid through to complex powered equipment.

Within a plan, assistive technology sits in the capital supports budget and splits into two tiers: low-cost assistive technology, priced under a published threshold, and higher-cost items that generally involve a quote and an assessment first.

An occupational therapist or another qualified assessor is often the person who recommends a specific item, based on a person’s functional needs rather than a named condition.
