EnableNSW
The NSW Health pathway for assistive technology, separate from the NDIS.
EnableNSW is the NSW Health program that provides assistive technology and related services to people in NSW with specific, short-term or ongoing health needs, so they can live safely at home. EnableNSW is a separate program with its own rules and its own application process - NDIS rules do not apply to it.
Who it serves
Three things sit at the core of eligibility: living in NSW or on Lord Howe Island, being enrolled in Medicare, and having a long-term health condition or disability. The program serves NSW residents whose needs fall outside other schemes. EnableNSW asks people with permanent disability to check NDIS eligibility first, and asks older people to check Home Care Package eligibility - a person who holds or is waiting on a package is not eligible. DVA card holders check their level of assistance with DVA before applying.
What it covers
Equipment spans communication, mobility, respiratory and self-care equipment, including continence products and home enteral nutrition, plus prosthetic limbs. Named programs include the Aids and Equipment Program, the Home Respiratory Program, Continence Assistance, the Prosthetic Limb Service, Specialised Equipment for Discharge, repairs and maintenance, travel assistance under IPTAAS, and home modification support under SASH.
How it works with the NDIS
The two programs run separately rather than on top of each other. EnableNSW's published guidance for NDIS participants lists two openings: the Home Respiratory Program, and compression garments through the Aids and Equipment Program where the need is not related to an accepted NDIS diagnosis. Eligibility for EnableNSW is decided by the program itself. The official program pages have the current criteria and application forms.
Applying
Applications go through a healthcare professional. Tell your treating clinician you are applying, and they can complete the relevant equipment request forms on your behalf. Have your Medicare card and any Centrelink or residency documents ready. EnableNSW also operates a co-payment arrangement for some equipment; the current details are on the official site.
