Functional capacity assessment (FCA)
A functional capacity assessment is an evaluation of what a person can and cannot do in daily life, used to inform plan decisions.
A functional capacity assessment looks at how a person manages everyday tasks, such as mobility, communication, and self-care, rather than focusing on a diagnosis.
An occupational therapist or another qualified assessor usually carries out this assessment, and the resulting report describes functional needs in concrete, task-based terms.
This kind of assessment often supports a request for higher-cost assistive technology or other capacity building supports, since it gives the NDIA evidence about what a support needs to achieve.
