The National Autism Strategy Explained

Above the individual programs sits a national plan for autism, and it is worth knowing about even though it is not something a family applies to. The National Autism Strategy sets the direction that the specific reforms move in, so reading it helps make sense of why those reforms are shaped the way they are. This article explains what the Strategy is, how it is organised, and how it relates to everything else in this pillar.

What it is

The Strategy is a whole-of-government plan rather than a service. It sets out a vision for a safe and inclusive society for all Autistic people, one that supports and empowers Autistic people to thrive across all parts of life. It is delivered by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, working across governments, which is why it touches many programs rather than being delivered as a single one.

How it is organised

The plan is structured around a set of outcome areas.

Those outcome areas are the organising idea: instead of a long list of disconnected measures, the Strategy groups its work into a handful of themes and asks what change is needed in each. It is supported by a First Action Plan that turns those themes into specific commitments with owners and timeframes.

Progress so far

A plan is only as real as the work behind it, and the government reports on that.
